Library Card Policy

Eligibility for and Type of Library Cards

The Grosse Pointe Public Library issues a library card at no charge to any resident or property owner in the Grosse Pointe Public School System, upon proof of current residency or property ownership. Library cards are renewed every three years.

Business/Student Card: A library card will be issued at no charge to any person working or attending school in Grosse Pointe/Harper Woods, as specified in the District Library Agreement, upon proof of at least 20 hours per week employment or enrollment and current address.

Outreach Card: Any person within the legal service area of the Grosse Pointe Public Library who is unable to come to the Library because of limited mobility, illness or handicap, either temporary or long term, is eligible for an Outreach Card.

Exceptions to the residency requirement include:

  1. Employees in Grosse Pointe who work more than half-time;
  2. Non-resident students enrolled in Grosse Pointe private schools may use card for personal reading and/or school assignments;
  3. Harper Woods residents living in the Grosse Pointe Public School System area are entitled to full borrowing privileges;
  4. Harper Woods residents living outside the Grosse Pointe Public School System are limited to borrowing privileges;
  5. TLN members are entitled to limited borrowing privileges;
  6. Members of participating MILibrary Card libraries in good standing are eligible for limited borrowing privileges (10 items; books (no new), recorded books and CDs). The patron’s home library will affix a MILibrary Card sticker to the individual library cards held by borrowers who are residents living in the library’s legally established service area, or the MILibrary Card logo will be printed on the patron’s home library card.

Exam Proctoring

In support of life-long learning, the Grosse Pointe Public Library provides free exam proctoring to cardholders and guest patrons of the library.

Freedom of Information Act

Library documents and records shall be available to the public in accordance with the Michigan Freedom of Information Act.
